Curriculum Overview

Heywood and District Secondary College strives towards engaging classroom practice by recognising and responding to students’ diverse learning needs. The College believes the respectful relationships between staff and students underpin the teaching and learning happening at the school. Students are taught to be reflective by taking responsibility for their own learning.

This year we introduced the new Victorian Curriculum across all subject areas. The Victorian Curriculum, from Foundation (prep) – 12, delivers the academic standards and expectations of our students.

In 2012 we pioneered an innovative Language and Culture Program which is based primarily on one of the Gunditjmara dialects, Dhauwurd Wurrung. In 2014, we also introduced Indonesian and this program has been strengthened and extended into Year 9.

Careers is embedded into our curriculum from Year 7 to 10, with each student being supported to develop their own Individual Learning Plan. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, set goals and reflect on their progress to develop strategies for improvement.

We provide additional reading support for students, using the Multi-Lit program, which provides one to one support to enable students to become more confident and effectively participate in their classes. Our Writers Support program works with small groups of students across the school to enhance writing skills. The Getting Ready in Numeracy program (GRIN) provides support for students to achieve greater success in Mathematics. This year the program also has sessions running to extend those students working above the expected level.

We support students’ involvement in the ‘RIST’ program, which provides a structured pathway into VCE Agriculture and Horticulture.

This year our TAFE and VET program is linked with the Hamilton District Skills Centre, offering new opportunities for our students with an interest in the Hospitality industry.

We continue to build our practices based on innovative technology by use of the ‘Virtual classroom’, a proven video conferencing delivery method which has been introduced to expand our VCE subject offerings at both Year 11 and 12.

Students can consolidate their skills after hours with our Homework Program offered to our students each Monday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm.

Curriculum Outline – Years 7-12

Please note that some subjects are offered as Year 7 only subjects, some as Year 7/8 combined subjects and some as Year 8 only subjects. Similarly, our electives are offered to both Years 9 and 10. We also offer an alternative program at Year 9 level – Hands On Learning – which operates one day a week. Some VCE subjects are offered to Year 10 students, as is the Rural Skills in Industry (RIST) program which can be commenced at age 15. Students in Years 10-12 have the opportunity to engage with Vocational Educational Training (VET) through a local TAFE provider. Staff support students to study distance education VCE subjects and virtual VCE subjects (delivered by technology with a teacher in a classroom in another school).

Detailed subject outlines can be found in our HDSC Curriculum Handbook 2017.
